The five sergers (also called overlock sewing machines) featured in this article are models that I learned while sewing. All of them are excellent sergers, but as you will see in the following reviews, the Juki MO654DE is my choice if you are looking for an excellent, high quality overlocker that will not cost you an arm and a leg.

However, if you are a beginner or you will not use a serger too often, or maybe you want something less expensive, then you should consider the Brother 1034D.

Let’s start with the reviews …

The 5 best Serger sewing machines:

# 1 – JUKI MO654DE (My recommendation)

As far as I’m concerned, the Juki MO654DE is one of the best machines you’ll find, and those reviews will reflect that.

Jukis are known for their reliability and durability. They produce very high quality home sewing machines as well as industrial products that you would see in many apparel factories.

This is the newest serger I bought to replace my older Juki model, which was in its final stages. I am so glad that I have committed myself to this point. I heard good reviews from my sewing friends and tried one for myself. You will need to invest a little more money in a Juki serger than some of the other brands, but it’s well worth it, because it’s a pleasure to use. It is super easy to thread and very easy to use. Also for beginners.

One thing you’ll hear is that sewing with an overlock machine may be louder than usual, but it’s not nearly as loud as my age. My cat stops running when I use it :).

Jukis have a color-coded thread system, adjustable stitch length and width, and a multipurpose foot that you can use for many different projects. You can also buy many other presser feet if you want to expand your sewing options.

This is one of the best overlock machines I have used, and I really can not recommend this model enough. You will not be disappointed!

# 2 – Janome 8002D

The Janome 8002D serger is another product that I love. This is also easy to use and runs much quieter than your typical sewing machine.

This 3 or 4-thread overlock also comes with a very good DVD that will help you learn everything you need to know about the Janome Serger. The dial and the color-coded threading card make it a breeze. If you are looking for something that can finish your threading projects with excellent seams or seams, you can not go wrong with this product. It works well on all types of fabrics.

Janome sewing machines are known for their longevity and quality and after use I can say that they live up to these high expectations. Between this and the Juki Serger, these are the best buys in the category, but they’re both a bit more expensive than the Brother 1034D.

# 3 – Janome 7933 Horizon Serger

I praised Janome 8002D earlier in this article, and the 7933 is another addition to the list that offers a high-end serger with a bonus bundle (a nice plus). The extras of this sergeant go beyond the normal thread and the needles.

You get some great extras: black bag, serger answer guide, thread bobbins and cones.

All these things are great additions to your arsenal. You also get the Janome 7933 unit. This unit is ultra-fast and provides 1,300 stitches per minute for precise sewing, even if you follow a strict schedule.

You can control the speed to go as fast or slow as you like.

When setting the machine settings, you will find options for setting the stitch length to 1 – 4 mm, while cutting can be set between 3.1 and 7.3 mm. The dial provides fast latitude adjustments while the speed of the device is electronically controlled.

The lay-in tension ensures that the four bobbins of the thread, all pre-threaded, can withstand the fast overcast without interrupting the process. Clamping discs also relax as you thread the machine to make threading easier.

When it comes to the length of the chuck, you can also set between 1 and 4 mm with a differential feed of 0.5 to 2.25 mm. There is a one-hand thread trimmer and snap-on presser feet.

If you want to switch between a simple overlock stitch and a rolled seam stitch, no plate changes are required.

If you choose Janome, you choose a high-end guarantee to protect your investment and a 5-year mechanical warranty. This is an exceptional guarantee that protects your investment and ensures years of use of the 7933.

This is a reasonably priced serger, and although it may be slightly more expensive than some of the other models on the list, it is a great buy that is often out of stock. If you’re lucky enough to find this item in stock, grab it while supplies last – so good.

# 4 – Brother 1034D (# 1 serger for beginners)

The Brother 1034D serger is an excellent choice if you are looking for a machine that offers the perfect balance of price, features and performance. It’s also surprisingly easy to use, which is probably the reason that it’s the # 1 serger that’s been on sale at Amazon for some time.

For such a cheap product, the Brother 1034D does an excellent job of creating seams, seams and edges on your sewing projects. It’s very easy to use and you’ll probably learn everything you need to know within hours of using it.

The helpful tips and instructions on the useful videos and instructions that are included in the delivery, you will quickly gain confidence. The video and manual both do a good job and explain the most intimidating aspect of these machines – how to thread them. With the instructions, I had no problems setting it up in less than 5 minutes.

As soon as I put it into operation, I noticed that it was running quietly for such a cheap device. It also covered all the basics that I tried and treated them wonderfully. I was very impressed with the results.

The 1034D really is a huge value and I think it’s the best for beginners. If you are looking for a less expensive machine and do not use it often, then I would buy it in the heartbeat.

# 5 – Brother Designio Series DZ1234 Serger

Brothers Designio series offers the DZ1234, which is cheaper than the 7933, but still a great overall machine. This product is often also in stock, which is considered when buying this machine.

However, high demand is a good thing.

The demand is so high because it is a big serger. You will not get some of the extras you found in the previous model, but you will receive a value of $ 75 thanks to the included hem stitch foot, collection foot, 2 sets of start thread and the piping foot.

Couture-level fashion is achieved with up to 1,300 stitches per minute, which this sewing machine has to offer.

You’ll also find a simple, color-coded threading that lets you quickly and easily thread your entire sewing machine. If you’re like me and you’re always having threading issues, this is a great addition to your serger.

No one wants the threading to be harder than it already is – certainly not.

As you familiarize yourself with the features of this model, you will see that it has many great extras to help make the fun fun again. You will enjoy a different fluid intake, which provides a ratio of 0.7 – 2.0 on your fabrics.

On thick and light fabrics a consistent stitch quality is achieved.

You can also adjust the stitch width between 3.0mm and 7.0mm to match the specific needs of your project.

The width is controlled by a practical dial. There is also a free arm and a flat, poor surface that allows you to reach hard-to-reach places on your design. When it comes to design confidence, Brother also offers a 25-year limited warranty.

Failure to properly operate or break the device may void the warranty.

You even get an operating CD and a technical CD to maximize your productivity while reducing the device’s learning curve.

Brother’s DZ1234 is the ideal choice for a budget-friendly, high-end Serger that can be used for years on end, making most projects relatively easy. This is a great serger for the money, and it’s also a model that’s selling out fast.

Final Thoughts – Which Should I Buy?

If you are a beginner, I would go with the Brother 1034D. It is inexpensive and very easy to use. If you will not use it every day, then you really can not go wrong. All the features and specifications of this particular product indicate that it is the best that exists today. Since the Brother models are one of the best companies to make this type of sewing machine, you are sure to get the highest quality when it comes to your serious projects. So there is really no reason for a debate here. The Brother 1034D is the top model today!

However, if you use an overlocker daily or several times a week, consider the JUKI MO654DE or Janome 8002D. They are an amazing value for what you get, and the time you spend saving on your projects is invaluable. I hope this message has helped you to decide what suits your needs best. What is a Serger Sewing Machine?

Although we have just reviewed these, you may not know exactly what they are and what they are for. A serger, also known as an overlock machine, is a powerful and efficient type that performs FAST and professional work on hems, hems and edges. As the fabric passes through the overlocker, multiple suture sutures are created and the sutures are cut, cut, sutured and finished in one go. Because it can do so much in one go, you can significantly reduce the time it takes to complete a project, and the end product has a professional, finished look that you would find in a store.

Here is a list of some features that these wonderful machines can do:

  • Finish seams – A 3-thread overlock stitch creates a strong seam that will not separate in the foreseeable future
  • Assembly – You can use the collection foot to make ruffles for clothes or other things like pillow sham covers
  • coverstitch – Most of the clothes you buy in a store are covered by a cover stitch. Some come with this feature, some do not, but it is certainly handy if you do clothes

Serger are in the “nice-to-have” category because you definitely do not need them, but they make sewing easier and much faster. You have a reputation for being a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you would not dream of sewing without one.

Overlocks are great, but they do not treat all Sewing works very well (eg buttonholes or zippers). But what it does, it does incredibly well. A reliable sewing machine, like the Brother CS6000i, and serger make a great pair.

What should I look for in an overlock sewing machine?

Some sewing machines can create a counterfeit overlock stitch. It is not a real overlock stitch that you would see on a garment in the store, as a sewing machine uses only two threads to make the stitch. On the other hand, serger sewing machines can use between three and five threads to make a perfect overlock stitch. To increase the speed while you work, find blades at the top and bottom of the unit that are cut to size as you work.

If you are unfamiliar with these finishing machines, it may be difficult to decide which one is right for you. There are a lot of features and price points to consider. Choosing the right one results from figuring out what you want to do with it. The following features should be considered when comparing these machines:

thread count
If you just want to finish edges of your clothes or other projects, then you will get along well with a 2/3/4 or 3/4 thread serger. If you definitely want to make cover stitches, you should look at machines with 5 threads.

voltage settings
All sewing machines and overlocks are equipped with tension adjustment devices. Tension is crucial when trying to get the perfect stitch. If you want worry-free turning around, a machine with automatic tension control would be a good option.

differential feed
When you work with crocheted, spandex or other fabrics that stretch, you know how important the differential feed is. This component keeps the material even and unrestrained while working and helps to create ruffles. Most models have this feature, but there are a few who do not check this before making their final decision.

use
When you buy a device for the home, you probably want a device that is easy to use. Unfortunately, most of the simplest machines with automatic needle threats can only be found in the expensive industrial models. However, you will find that some makes and models are easier to use than others. Read the reviews and make sure they are delivered with sufficient teaching material or better yet with a instructional DVD or video series.

Although it is a highly specialized device, the purchase does not have to be overwhelming or complicated. Read our product overviews to explore and compare features.
